Our Mission

The O’Brate Foundation will strive to improve the opportunities for disadvantaged youth in Kansas by assisting with emergency needs, providing educational scholarships to deserving youth, and addressing specific stumbling blocks lying in their path on the road to success.
 

Our Vision

The O’Brate Foundation recognizes that the future is in the hands of today’s youth. To make the future brighter for all, disadvantaged youth must be given opportunities for success. The Foundation will strive to improve the chance for success of these Kansas youth.
 

Who We Serve

Kansas Youth ages 17 - 25:

  • Who have been in foster care and are transitioning independent living.

  • Who have limited resources and/or an immediate need which has created an unstable or unsafe living condition.

Dual Credit Scholarship

The O’Brate Foundation desires for all students to have the ability to take college courses while in high school. Scholarships are provided to students with limited resources, who would not otherwise be able to take dual credit courses. Please go to https://obratefdn.smapply.org/ and complete the eligilbity criteria after creating an account to be given access to the application if you qualify.  Priority consideration is given to students who apply prior to or early in the semester.

O'Brate Regular Scholarship - Deadline May 1st, 2018

The O’Brate Foundation invites youth with limited resources who are pursuing higher education to apply for a scholarship. We are committed to helping these youth attain their personal goals and become successful members of society. Scholarships are based on financial need and range in size from $1,000 to $5,000 annually. These scholarships are renewable until the age of 25.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Financial Need

  2. 2.5 GPA or higher

  3. Full-time student

  4. Plans to attend (or currently attending)
    technical, 2 year or a 4 year higher education institution, or graduate school

  5. Work Experience and continued commitment to work while in school

  6. Drive and determination to succeed

  7. Kansas High School Graduate or equivalent

Immediate Needs Assistance - Application always open

The O’Brate Foundation will consider, on an individual basis, addressing short-term immediate needs for young adult (ages 17-25) if no other resources are available.
Immediate Needs can only assist with in Kansas:
Food, Rent Assistance, Utilities, and Clothing if all other resources have been exhausted.  

Immediate Needs Cannot assist with any travel or education related expenses.  

Application Access: The immediate needs application must be started by an adult sponsor which includes: teachers, school counselors, DCF case managers, or other qualified professionals. 
Please go to https://obratefdn.smapply.org/ and complete the eligilbity criteria after creating an account to be given access to the application if you qualify to apply on behalf of a young Adult.  Please allow 24-48 hours for an initial response time to receive access to the application. 

The adult sponsor will complete most of the immediate needs application, although the young adult in need of assistance will also be responsible for completing demographic information and an essay. 

 


Summer Scholarship - Deadline April 15, 2018

The O'Brate Foundation recognizes that oftentimes students struggle to pay for summer courses because financial aid is limited. Therefore, we invite students with limited resources to apply for a summer scholarship. In order to be given access to the application please go to https://obratefdn.smapply.org/  and complete eligibity criteria to see if you qualify after February 1, 2018.  

Eligibility Criteria
  1. Priority Consideration will be given to current O’Brate Scholars.

  2. Financial Need
